Not the 5 stars Reacher book I used to read! Good but really not the best! I gives 4 stars but really could be only 3 since there was some lengths and plot was jumping with all kinds of directions changes! Hoping the next one will be better! Thanks to the authors for sharing
Doug,
This book read like a parody of Jack Reacher books。 Most Reacher novels are 90% logic and 10% violence and this had the opposite proportions。 Perhaps the first person narrative had something to do with it。 Hate to report this since Reacher books are among my all time favs。
Eric Steed,
Great book! Enjoyed the many plot twists。 The story had me second guessing from the very beginning。 Thanks Lee!
Michale,
This was a nice distraction, but it in no way compares to the earlier JR books。 The writing is less tight, the grammar sloppy at times, and Reacher has turned into a nomad looking for distraction himself。 His soul is gone。
John,
This one was disappointing。 I felt like it jumped around very quickly and I even backed up the book several times thinking I had missed something in the story only to discover that the the Childs missed something on this one。 It wasn't bad, just not up to snuff。 How many times did we have to hear that his punches, kicks or elbows would have debilitated a normal guy? Ramiro Guerra,
Not the usual。 Plot or methodFe。alt like the there was not much of a story to tell。 So there were too many instances where every motion was described in way too much detail in order to fill the pages with it!
Kathy,
This book was just plain boring!!!
Craig,
Not as good as many past efforts。 First time I read one in one sitting。 The writing is thin and shows two brains。 You can almost spot Lee v Andrew in the text。 It might be time to revisit the why behind the Reacher phenomenon。 I blame Tom Cruise。
Jenn Morgans,
Not one of my favourite Reachers, I’ll admit。 Some of that is due to the fact I don’t like the ones in first person as much as I like the ones in third person, and some of it is due to some bafflingly messy plotting and a lot of disjointed action scenes。
John,
Despite Child's best intentions, this series is getting long in the tooth。 Which hardly explains why I read it in less than 24 hours。 Kinda like watching yet another forgettable episode of a crime show, I suppose。 Note to self: don't race out to get the next volume as soon as it is released。Note to (br)others: Isn't it interesting how we begin our reading lives devouring every Hardy Boys book we can get our hands on and sixty years later we are doing the same thing with another crime series for Despite Child's best intentions, this series is getting long in the tooth。 Which hardly explains why I read it in less than 24 hours。 Kinda like watching yet another forgettable episode of a crime show, I suppose。 Note to self: don't race out to get the next volume as soon as it is released。Note to (br)others: Isn't it interesting how we begin our reading lives devouring every Hardy Boys book we can get our hands on and sixty years later we are doing the same thing with another crime series for boys。 From Franklin W。 Dixon to Lee and Andrew Child。 Will we ever grow up? 。。。more
Dlora,
Jack Reacher is the selling feature of this book but the main character really isn't Jack Reacher。 He's not as smart, not as invincible, not as assured, but still a big strong guy who knows how to fight。 And there are lots of fight scenes。 This Reacher also seems to have a bit more respect for the police and a little less of the strong moral compass that drives Reacher to often be judge, jury, and executioner。 If I'd just stop comparing this Andrew Child's Jack Reacher to Lee Child's Jack Reache Jack Reacher is the selling feature of this book but the main character really isn't Jack Reacher。 He's not as smart, not as invincible, not as assured, but still a big strong guy who knows how to fight。 And there are lots of fight scenes。 This Reacher also seems to have a bit more respect for the police and a little less of the strong moral compass that drives Reacher to often be judge, jury, and executioner。 If I'd just stop comparing this Andrew Child's Jack Reacher to Lee Child's Jack Reacher, I'd enjoy the book more。 Still, it was enjoyable to read, fast moving, interesting and twisty。 。。。more
Susan,
Outstanding narrator and novel。 I really like this series。
Wanda L Holt,
Do not buyWorst Jack Reacher book I have read。 There 3-4 pages just describing a room they were in。 I probably skipped half the book because of that。 And not enough action。
Hf,
The ending could have been more solid…
Shaun Jennings,
Worst Reacher book I've read and I've read them all, some multiple times over the years。 This was just awful, a boring, unbelievable, linear plot that was very longwinded and Reacher did too much pussyfooting around。 I kept on waiting for the magic moment where the story and plot would really kick in but it never came。 The ending was slightly better than I expected but still pretty poor overall Worst Reacher book I've read and I've read them all, some multiple times over the years。 This was just awful, a boring, unbelievable, linear plot that was very longwinded and Reacher did too much pussyfooting around。 I kept on waiting for the magic moment where the story and plot would really kick in but it never came。 The ending was slightly better than I expected but still pretty poor overall 。。。more
Dan,
Lots of twists and turns。 It seems too many as the story bogs in the details。
David Dixon,
Good but…。。A good story but, isn’t it time Reacher retired, how old is the guy and he still runs around beating up guys 20 or 30 years younger than him, get real。 If you must write stories about Reacher, then go back to his past there must still be a few good stories lurking there。
Brian,
Sad timesWhen Lee Child indicated he felt he was aging out of the Reacher novels I had some hope that Andrew could keep it going。 I was wrong。I’m certain it’s hard for a writer to shift to 1st person, and when they do it should be because they can make the dialog consistent, robust and intentional。 This wasn’t the case in Better Off Dead (how ironic of title is that?)。 The dialog is random, feels like it is being created for word count, not that it supports the story line or the main character。 Sad timesWhen Lee Child indicated he felt he was aging out of the Reacher novels I had some hope that Andrew could keep it going。 I was wrong。I’m certain it’s hard for a writer to shift to 1st person, and when they do it should be because they can make the dialog consistent, robust and intentional。 This wasn’t the case in Better Off Dead (how ironic of title is that?)。 The dialog is random, feels like it is being created for word count, not that it supports the story line or the main character。 I hope that this hero can be rescued。 。。。more
Lee Cochenour,
Better than the last one, but boy do I miss Lee Child。
Sue,
Don't know if Mr Child is getting older or less interested, or if it's a result of his son's involvement, but this book and the last one were both disappointments。 Reacher is slightly off, other characters not really developed at all, and soooo many places where the plot line was so shortchanged that it was just cheating。 Areas they did spend time on were ridiculous。 Example: Reacher is about to fight a behemoth he has faced twice before, and has said several times does not want to fight again。 Don't know if Mr Child is getting older or less interested, or if it's a result of his son's involvement, but this book and the last one were both disappointments。 Reacher is slightly off, other characters not really developed at all, and soooo many places where the plot line was so shortchanged that it was just cheating。 Areas they did spend time on were ridiculous。 Example: Reacher is about to fight a behemoth he has faced twice before, and has said several times does not want to fight again。 So we spend several pages with crazy descriptions of the naturally ensuing third fight, complete with description after description of how every blow Reacher lands would have ended any other fight/fighter。 Then it finally ends with reacher satisfyingly stomping on the guy's spinal cord。 But I guess everyone forgot Reacher had a gun and the person he was with had an Uzi。 Why not just pull an Indiana Jones AND SHOOT THE GUY?!?*sigh* 。。。more
Jenny,
I love the Jack Reacher series but this book was unreadable。 The writing style of the new author was difficult to read with almost no sentence more than 1 to 5 words。 The female character was unlikeable。 I put the book down 1/4 of the way through and don’t plan on picking it up again。
Calton Bolick,
Not bad。 A Jack Reacher story, so does what it says on the tin。 That's something that the Brits say。 It means no big surprises。 Nothing unexpected。There's a thing about the writing style, though。 It's narrated by Jack Reacher。 "First-person", they call it。 Jack is a terse guy。 He writes like he's talking out the side of his mouth。 Brusquely。 In sentence fragments。 Constantly。It's an affection。 It gets irritating。 Quickly。 Not bad。 A Jack Reacher story, so does what it says on the tin。 That's something that the Brits say。 It means no big surprises。 Nothing unexpected。There's a thing about the writing style, though。 It's narrated by Jack Reacher。 "First-person", they call it。 Jack is a terse guy。 He writes like he's talking out the side of his mouth。 Brusquely。 In sentence fragments。 Constantly。It's an affection。 It gets irritating。 Quickly。 。。。more
Andy,
Same old same old。
Billy Wells,
The same old same old plot。 It seems to be working so I guess it will continue。 I’ve read them all so I’m a brute for punishment。 One change in the plot was a monster adversary Reacher could not push around like all the others。A major character with the silly name Dendonker being repeated a thousand times was extremely annoying。 I listened to the audio book so I don’t know how to spell it。 Scott Brick got a real workout on the main bad guy’s name。
Mahita,
Short Take: not a great story to keep me engaged, but, as a Reacher fan - it kept me going till the end。

First Reacher book I've given 3 stars to,because there's little of the Reacher we know and love here。Plus, not a good plot either。Pity the transition to Andrew Child is not working。 First Reacher book I've given 3 stars to,because there's little of the Reacher we know and love here。Plus, not a good plot either。Pity the transition to Andrew Child is not working。 。。。more
